The Stan Smith is the plainest famous shoe ever made. Craig Green left the upper exactly where it was and then tied it down — a single cord running the length of the foot, the way a diving boot is strapped shut.

Underneath, a ridged sole that has never been near a tennis court.

Background

Craig Green has spent his career tying things. Cords, straps, lashings — the same gesture repeated across a decade of collections, on jackets, on trousers, on garments that were barely clothes at all. It is the closest thing he has to a signature, and he has never explained it.

When adidas handed him the Stan Smith, he did not redraw it. He left the upper alone, ran a cord over the top of it, and set the whole thing on a sole built for water.

The Stan Smith has been reissued more often than almost any shoe alive. This is one of the few versions where you can still see the original underneath.
