Background

Bruce Kilgore drew it in 1982. Two years later, Nike stopped making it.

Three shoe stores in Baltimore refused to accept that. They kept ordering, kept selling, because the people wearing it would not take a replacement. The shoe came back because the street would not move on — and it has not left production since.

Supreme opened in 1994 on Lafayette Street, a skate shop laid out so you could ride straight through the middle of it. It was never built to become a brand. The red rectangle arrived early and has not changed since.

Two things that lasted by standing still. When they were finally put together in March 2020, almost nothing was added — a mark on the heel, a second set of laces, ninety-six dollars.
